Behind the Façade — Carla Aurora Hope

Wear It Purple Day is about visibility, acceptance and creating a world where young LGBTQIA+ people know that who they are is something to be proud of.

But for me, purple represents something else as well.

It represents the space between hiding and being seen.

I know what it is like to live behind a façade.

For much of my life, I learned how to become what the world expected me to be. I learned how to perform the right role, say the right things and present the version of myself that felt safest for everyone else.

From the outside, the façade worked.

Inside, there was a very different story.

There was a little girl who knew who she was long before she had the words to explain it. She learned that sometimes being invisible felt safer than being authentic.

And when you spend long enough hiding parts of yourself, something painful can happen.

You begin to wonder whether those parts deserve to exist at all.

That is why days like Wear It Purple Day matter.

Live Your Truth

Live Your Truth has become one of the most important messages in my life.

But living your truth isn’t simply about announcing who you are.

Sometimes it begins quietly.

It might be telling one trusted person.

Trying a different name.

Wearing something that feels like you.

Allowing yourself to imagine a future where you no longer have to hide.

Or simply looking in the mirror and admitting something you have been afraid to say:

This is who I am.

For some people, living their truth happens loudly and proudly.

For others, it happens slowly, carefully and privately.

Both are valid.

Visibility should never become another expectation placed upon LGBTQIA+ people. Nobody owes the world their coming-out story. Nobody should have to risk their safety to prove that they are proud.

Sometimes living your truth means simply refusing to abandon yourself.

You Are Enough

There is another message I wish every LGBTQIA+ young person could hear:

You are enough.

Not when you become more confident.

Not when your family understands.

Not when your friends accept you.

Not when your body changes.

Not when you find the perfect label.

Not when somebody else finally validates who you are.

Now.

You are enough now.

I understand how difficult that can be to believe.

Even after choosing to live authentically, the question can remain:

Am I enough?

Am I woman enough?

Queer enough?

Strong enough?

Successful enough?

Visible enough?

The façade may disappear, but sometimes the doubts it created remain.

Healing has meant learning that I do not need to continually prove my right to exist as myself.

Neither do you.

Why We Wear Purple

When a school, workplace, community organisation or individual wears purple, the message needs to mean more than changing the colour of a shirt for a day.

It should say:

You are safe here.

You belong here.

You do not need to hide here.

Because somewhere there may be a young person watching.

A young person who hasn’t told anyone yet.

Someone questioning who they are.

Someone carefully testing whether the adults around them are safe.

Someone who has become incredibly skilled at maintaining their own façade.

They may never tell you that your purple shirt mattered.

But they will notice.

And sometimes knowing that even one person might accept you is enough to make tomorrow feel possible.

To the Person Still Behind the Façade

If you are reading this while hiding part of yourself, I want you to know something I wish the little girl inside me had heard many years ago.

There is nothing weak about taking your time.

You don’t have to have everything figured out.

You don’t need the perfect words.

You don’t have to become somebody else to deserve belonging.

Your story belongs to you.

Tell it when you are ready.

Live it in the way that feels right for you.

And until you are able to say it confidently for yourself, perhaps you can borrow these words:

You are enough.

Exactly as you are.

This Wear It Purple Day, I wear purple for every person who has found the courage to step out from behind their façade.

I wear it for those who are beginning to.

And most importantly, I wear it for those who are still there, quietly wondering whether the world will ever be safe enough for them to be seen.

I see you.

Your life matters.

Your truth matters.

And when the time is right, I hope you discover the freedom of no longer having to disappear.

Live Your Truth.

You Are Enough.
